Stimulate collagen to lessen breakdown

We have all heard the word in conversation with our aestheticians. We see it on many beauty products but what actually is it?

Collagen is the main structural protein found in the skin and other connective tissues. Along with elastin and soft keratin, it is responsible for skin strength and elasticity, and its degradation/breakdown leads to wrinkles that accompany aging. Young skin is made up of approximately 80 percent of collagen. After the age of 25, it is estimated we lose at a rate of about 1 percent of our collagen each year. The result is gradual fine lines and sagging skin from the collagen breaking down and becoming weaker.

WHAT CAUSES THE BREAKDOWN OF THIS PROTEIN?

The main factors responsible for the aging of our skin are exposure to the rays of the sun, smoking, poor diet and lack of exercise. We southerners love the sun! Fear not, you can be sun safe with proper sunscreens. I recommend using a broad spectrum SPF 50+ daily.

You should begin using products to stimulate your collagen in your 20s as this is the age range it begins to weaken. If you do not stimulate your collagen, it will continue to break down and your only option of correction will be surgery. You can use medical-grade skin care products to stimulate your collagen. Are you currently using a skin care line you love and not interested in changing? Add some of the medical- grade products to your daily regimen to boost the effects you receive! One may utilize products, chemical peels and laser in the beginning, then save surgery for the last option of choice.

CHEMICAL PEELS

Chemical peels are a chemical way to stimulate that precious protein we desire, collagen, plus also a way to correct hyperpigmentation and pore size. Chemical peels, depending on the type, are usually better in a series to correct pigment and texture issues.

LASERS

Lasers are also another way to stimulate collagen. Laser peels provide skin resurfacing and rejuvenation that can be performed in either ablative modes, non-ablative, fractional modes depending on the particular aesthetic outcome the patient and aesthetician wish to achieve to remove fine wrinkles while significantly improving deeper, more dynamic wrinkles and building collagen.

So you see, collagen is very important to our bodies. Allow protection, stimulation and correction be your goal starting today!
