Meeting your goals start with prep time

Have you ever felt overwhelmed? Do multiple projects and an endless list of things to do clutter your mind and home? A few months ago, when I was struggling with the same problem, I found a solution that helped me, and hopefully, it will help you, too!

Walking around my home, I gathered my planner, calendar, list of things to do, projects, papers listing things I needed to remember, and my computer. Putting them together in a large sturdy tote bag, I headed out the door to my car. I find that planning away from home is more productive for me because I am easily distracted at home with laundry and cleaning that needs to be done.

I drove to a local favorite coffee shop and ordered a delicious cup of coffee and found a perfect quiet corner to sit. It was time to get organized, prioritize and plan! I sat back in my chair with coffee in hand and took a deep breath. (This also was a good time for me to prayerfully ask God for guidance as I began my planning time.)

I started by opening my computer and made a “Project List” where I typed a list of all the upcoming projects I have, my family has, and ones I’d love to accomplish in the future. Then, on another sheet I typed “Things to do.” Reaching into my tote bag, I pulled out each sheet of paper one by one, read them, and either added it to my project list, to-do list, or calendar.

A few hours later, I finally made it to the bottom of the paper pile. Now, it was time to put my list in some kind of order. First, I worked on establishing a completion goal date for most of the items on my project list. Because there are things I just can’t accomplish right now, many ideas and goals don’t have dates yet, but at least they are on the list for the future! Second, I took the items on my to-do list and divided them into groups: to-do’s, errands, phone calls, computer, text messages, emails, home, office, and a few more.

This planning time took a while, several hours actually, but the relief I felt walking out of that coffee shop that day made such a difference. I came home with a clearer mind and a new focus! I still try to review my list of projects and goals at least once a month and ask myself some questions: What do I need to accomplish this month? Am I going to make that original deadline, or does it need to be moved to a later date? What do I need to prioritize now? One by one, items are slowly getting crossed off my list and what a great feeling that is!

I hope to have a few planning days at least a couple of times every year. I encourage you to also pack a bag with your calendar, a few projects, your computer or notebook, and schedule a planning day soon. It’s a new year — make it the very best yet!
