6 tips for a vibrant, long-lasting Christmas tree

A beautiful Christmas tree is a holiday centerpiece, filling your home with the scent of fresh pine and a feeling of festive joy. But without proper care and attention, your tree can become messy, unhealthy — and even a fire hazard.

So how can you keep your tree, especially if you buy it early in the season, looking vibrant and lush? Follow these tips to extend your tree’s life and keep it looking its best:

1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TREE

The best place to start is to pick a healthy tree. Look for bright green needles and branches that are pliable and not brittle. Give the tree a gentle shake; if lots of needles drop, the tree may be too dry already. Firs and pines are generally good options, as they tend to retain their needles longer compared to other types.

2. MAKE A FRESH CUT

Before setting up your tree, make a fresh cut about an inch from the base of the trunk. This removes any dried-out sap that may have formed at the bottom and helps the tree absorb water better. It’s best to do this right before placing the tree in its stand, as even a few hours without water can cause the cut end to seal over and reduce water uptake.

3. WATER IMMEDIATELY AND REGULARLY

Water is the most crucial factor in keeping your tree fresh. Once your tree is secured in its stand, fill the stand with water immediately. A good rule of thumb is that a Christmas tree can absorb up to a gallon of water in the first 24 hours, so keep an eye on the water level during that time. Afterward, ensure the water level remains above the base of the trunk. Never let the water level drop below the cut end of the tree, as this can cause the trunk to seal up again and limit water absorption.

4. KEEP YOUR TREE AWAY FROM HEAT

Keep your tree away from fireplaces, radiators, heaters or any other heat sources, as these can cause it to dry out faster. Also make sure to lower the thermostat slightly in the room where your tree is located to help preserve its freshness. Avoid placing your tree in direct sunlight, which also can accelerate the drying process.

5. USE THE RIGHT ADDITIVES — OR SKIP THEM ALTOGETHER

There are lots of additives and preservatives on the market for Christmas trees, not to mention claims about the benefits of sugar, aspirin and other household products. In truth, studies have shown that plain water is often just as effective. If you want to try an additive, make sure it’s designed specifically for Christmas trees and won’t damage the tree or affect its water absorption.

6. AVOID OVERDECORATING

Heavy ornaments or excessive lights can weigh down branches and cause needle loss. Use lightweight decorations and LED lights, which produce less heat, to keep your tree looking its best. If you notice any wilting or browning branches, remove heavy ornaments from that area to reduce stress on the tree.

Taking the time to care for your tree daily not only keeps it looking great, but also helps reduce the risk of fire and prolongs your family’s enjoyment.
