Do you have a wardrobe that’s bursting at the seams but somehow feel like you have nothing to wear? Then it’s time for that most essential of spring-cleaning tasks: a closet audit.
Having an efficient closet saves you time and money (couldn’t we all use more of those?!). Plus, an organized, purposeful wardrobe is kinder to the planet, allows your creativity to flow and creates calmness and serenity, making decisions easier and faster.
HERE ARE SOME POINTS TO CONSIDER:
- Scientific studies prove that too much stuff is stressful and overwhelming. Manageable amounts give us peace, and things we love bring us joy.
- You will get dressed faster when your apparel is organized and sorted.
- Would you rather make a choice between two things or 30 things? Your closet should give you a reasonable number of choices, so dressing is easier.
I am a firm believer in sustainable fashion. When you donate or give away items you don’t wear or need, our landfills stay emptier. Purging is usually the hardest part, and women often find it difficult to decide what to keep and what to discard.
AS YOU’RE GOING THROUGH YOUR CLOSET, ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS:
- Have I worn this in the last 18 months?
- Are there styles I regularly choose to wear instead of this piece?
- Does it flatter my figure and make me feel great?
- Is it modern and up to date? (Classics are modern, btw)
If you answer “no,” it’s time to part with the piece.
You shouldn’t feel bad about getting rid of things, and there are some ways to avoid this. First, sell what you can to a consignment store or on an online platform; it’s cash in your pocket! If you have items that are sentimental, give them to women you know who would love them, like friends, family or colleagues.
Some styles may just need some alterations. Take them to a seamstress for her advice. The rest should be donated to a thrift store or an organization that helps the homeless and those in need.
A closet audit is a powerful tool that offers a multitude of benefits, from enhancing organization and promoting sustainability to boosting mental clarity and refining personal style.
