Bringing the ‘WOW’ to work

Here’s what power dressing means now

Whether we are attending an important event or just going to the office, women tend to ask the same question: What do I wear? We all get hung up sometimes when it comes to clothes, especially when we want to make a certain statement or a positive impression. At times, I get overwhelmed choosing what to wear to work and wonder, “Is this professional enough?” I know I’m not the only one.

When you hear the term “power dressing,” you might envision a standard suit, a structured dress or bland colors. The idea of “power dressing” originated in the 70s to early 80’s when women wanted to be seen as confident, powerful and successful as their male counterparts.

Today, power dressing is all about showcasing who you are in the workplace, with bold colors and office wear that’s a cut above your standard suit. We already know we are successful and that the work we do speaks for itself. Confidence is something that’s in you, but it also can shine through what you wear. Here’s some pieces to add to your closet the next time you feel lost and want to personalize your corporate style:

BLAZERS WITH A TWIST

Go ahead and add any blazer with a print or a powerful color to your wardrobe. One of my favorite colors to use are Kelly greens, cobalt blues and plums. I’m in love with Zara’s green jacquard blazer with a tied-waist detail (www. zara.com); everything about this is elevated and unique, definitely a cut above your ordinary work wear. You can dress this up with just a neutral blouse and still look sophisticated Bold colors, textures and unique styling are what you’re looking for.

POWER IN THE PUFF

Love a puff sleeve? Me, too — and they can be office appropriate. Pieces with balloon sleeves are also in, like this one from & Other Stories www.stories.com). Pair with a sleek pant and a heel — perfect! It’s such an easygoing ensemble, and you don’t even have to think about it.

VEST OBSESSED

In case you haven’t noticed, vests are heavily on trend right now. A vest makes any outfit look polished and sophisticated, whether it’s work wear or jeans; take the chic Monika waistcoat by Aligne, for instance (https:// aligne.co/). Most of the time, you will see vests paired with a flared or cropped-style pants. Don’t hesitate to experiment with both.

COLOR, COLOR — AND MORE COLOR

Above all, spice up your wardrobe with color. Colors that are complementary to your skin tone and personality will make you shine in the workplace. Incorporating bold colors into your bottoms, skirts, dresses, jumpsuits and even two-pieces is a fun update to your work style. Check out this striped blouse from Mango for inspiration.
