Missing your pre-baby body? Consider a mommy makeover

By Dr. Anna Pavlov

For many moms, becoming pregnant and giving birth is thrilling. However, it can be discouraging to find that your body may not go back to normal, and diet and exercise often aren’t enough to counteract the post-childbirth changes. If this sounds familiar, you might consider undergoing a “mommy makeover” with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

WHAT IS A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

Mommy makeover refers to surgery of the breast and abdomen to correct common changes women see after giving birth and breastfeeding. It is an all-inclusive term for procedures like breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction, tummy tuck and labiaplasty. Because each body is unique, mommy makeovers are tailored to the woman and the changes she desires. Some common issues addressed include:

  • Deflated, sagging breasts
  • Loose, stretched abdominal skin
  • Separated or bulging abdominal muscles or fascia
  • Stubborn fat
  • Vaginal or vulvar stretching

WHO QUALIFIES FOR A MOMMY MAKEOVER?

Generally, a mommy makeover is recommended for women who are least six months out from completing breastfeeding and are done childbearing. This is to decrease the risk of complications from the presence of milk in the breasts and to preserve long-term results. Patients who plan to have a breast lift, breast reduction or tummy tuck also will need to be nicotine free for several weeks before and after surgery.

WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE?

Recovery from breast and abdominal surgery typically takes three to four weeks. This is the time required for your incisions and underlying musculature to heal before you can start exercising, lifting weights and resuming normal activities. Most patients will need to take 10-14 days off work, but this also will depend on their specific occupation and the surgical procedures they are having.

WHAT ARE THE FINANCING OPTIONS?

Insurance typically does not cover the procedures included in a mommy makeover, except for breast reduction for qualified patients. Your quote will include the surgeon fee, anesthesia fee, facility fee and postoperative care. Care Credit is accepted, along with all major credit cards or cash.

Patients who undergo a mommy makeover enjoy a restored pre-pregnancy body contour and enhanced self-esteem.
