Faces of Success: Brandy McGill

‘It’s not just a job; it’s a purpose’

Brandy McGill found a deep connection with the Gulf Coast in 2019 through WLOX. After spending two years enjoying coastal life, she returned to Hattiesburg to anchor the morning news at WDAM. Ultimately, the pull of the coast proved irresistible, and last May, the Good Morning Mississippi anchor at WLOX News and mom of two boys bought her first home here, establishing roots on the Coast.

HOW DID YOU START ON YOUR CAREER PATH?

“My path into television news began in my childhood. I used to watch the news with my grandma, and I was especially inspired by Miranda Beard’s style and presence on WDAM. My passion for writing, photography and storytelling made it clear early on that a career in news was meant for me.”

WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR YOUR WORK COME FROM?

“I have a deep passion for my career because I know it’s far greater than just myself. Every day, I have the opportunity to reach thousands of people, not only to inform but also to inspire. I truly believe this is my calling — something I was meant to do. My job is more than delivering the news; it’s about being a trusted voice for my community.

Viewers depend on me to bring them accurate and reliable information on everything from crime and health to hurricanes and education. I take that responsibility seriously because I understand how much my community relies on me. That’s why my career is so important to me. It’s not just a job, it’s a purpose.”

WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME STANDOUT MOMENTS IN YOUR WORK?

“Throughout my career, I’ve had several standout moments that have shaped me. I’ve sat with mothers who have lost their children to violence, hearing their pain and sharing their stories with the hope of bringing awareness and change. I marched the streets along the Coast during the George Floyd protests, covering a historic movement as emotions ran high and voices demanded justice.

Working during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic was another defining moment — navigating the unknown while ensuring my community stayed informed. But beyond the major events, one of the most meaningful parts of my career has been the relationships I’ve formed along the way. Connecting with people, earning their trust and making a lasting impact is what makes this work so fulfilling.”

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

“I’m most proud that I get to live out my dream while being a loving mom to my two boys. Balancing my career and motherhood isn’t always easy, but it’s the most rewarding journey. Knowing that I can pursue my passion while setting an example for my children means everything to me. They are my greatest motivation, and their love and support make every success even more meaningful.”

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

“I define success as overcoming failures and obstacles that life throws my way. I believe the road to success is straight and narrow, and while I may get off course at times, what truly matters is finishing the race — at my own pace. Success isn’t about perfection; it’s about perseverance. I credit my self-discipline and determination for helping me stay the course, push through challenges and keep moving forward no matter what.”

WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT US TO KNOW ABOUT YOU OR YOUR WORK?

“I strive to tell stories that truly matter, giving a voice to those who need to be heard and delivering information that impacts my community. Because I truly care, every report I share is approached with sincerity and a deep sense of responsibility. I take the time to research, ask the right questions and present the facts with care, ensuring that my storytelling is both meaningful and trustworthy. My goal is to inform, inspire and connect with people in a way that truly makes a difference.”
