Get ahead of the fashion curve with fall’s hottest trends

By Sharon Weeks

New season, new trends! Well, that’s not completely true, as some trends stay and evolve while others are in and out so fast that you don’t even have a chance to try them. There’s a time and place for “trendy,” but a look that’s elevated, effortless and classic — and perhaps incorporates a chic trend on occasion — is timeless. Think ballet flats, wide-leg denim, belts and blazers.

Having said that, I’m excited to share some of my favorite trends that were on repeat with high-end contemporary brands in New York City and elsewhere. Fall may feel far away, but the fashion world is already gearing up for the next season. Try a trend that you maybe haven’t tried previously and make it your own while incorporating your personal style. You can bet these trends will have staying power for seasons to come:

RED ALERT

We’re starting off strong with a bold color for fall: red! This color is hot in all shades, from cranberry to crimson to cherry. We’re not just talking about a pop of color; we’re talking fully monochromatic looks. This trend extends beyond red, too, to bold gemstone colors like emerald. But if you prefer just a pop of color, chartreuse is another fall favorite (I don’t suggest this one in a head-to-toe look).

RECYCLED LEATHER

Another trend I saw at Los Angeles market recently (and loved) was recycled leather. It’s less than half the price of real leather and a pair of pants in this material looks just as good as a brand-new pair of $1,000 leather pants.

OBSESSED WITH OUTERWEAR AND FEMININE DETAILS

Also on the trend list was outerwear; think puffer vests, but with a preppy, feminine touch. Speaking of feminine, we saw lots of bow details — on bags, shoes and beyond. Ruffles are getting their moment for the autumn season, as well as florals, and one-shoulder necklines shouldn’t be missed, either.

MAD ABOUT MENSWEAR

Finally, on the opposite end of the spectrum, we see menswear-inspired styles continuing to dominate the fall wardrobe lineup. Look for patch-pocket blazers, oversized jackets and studded hardware on buttery leather flats, belts and miniskirts.

Taking all of these into consideration, which trends speak to you? Start with one or two, but remember that less is more and try not to wear them all at once. The best look is one that complements your personality and lifestyle and makes you feel confident and ready to take on the world!
