Believe it or not, getting organized is more of a mindset than an activity. If I had to choose a word to describe it, I would use the word “lifestyle.” We’re not all born into this lifestyle or with good organizational habits, but thankfully, anyone can develop them. Staying tidy starts with a series of decisions that you choose to make and stick with every day.
Sometimes, committing can be the most challenging part of the whole process, but in the end, it is the most rewarding. Anyone can adopt the mindset needed to have an organized life. All you need is determination, discipline, consistency and a desire for better.
Organization requires setting up routines and sticking to them. It takes commitment and problem-solving skills, like creating a “home” for your belongings and ensuring that they always return there after they’re used. You certainly can hire a professional to organize your space, and I highly recommend it, but you must be purposeful in your daily choices to maintain your masterpiece.
Organization comes with a trained mindset not unlike that of the military: There is no other option but to complete the task. This may sound odd or extreme, but you must adopt this style of thinking to maintain order. As 1 Corinthians 14:40 states, “Let all things be done decently and in order.”
Adopting this mindset starts with a self-evaluation. What type of attitude do you have about keeping your surroundings neat, and is it consistent with that of an organized person? Are you willing to adopt these new behavior patterns to create lasting change? My favorite question to ask is, “What is your why?” What is your reason for wanting to change your behavior patterns and adopt new ones? Your answers to these questions will determine whether you are ready for a new mindset. If your why is not important enough to you, you may not put forth the effort needed to make your new lifestyle permanent. Be honest with yourself; after all, it is for your benefit.
So, are you ready for this change that will bring you more peace and less stress? Will you do what it takes to adopt a different mindset and become organized? If so, congratulations — and welcome your new lifestyle.
