More than just a hairstylist, Krystal Ben, owner of Hair Fetish, sees herself as true “hair visionary.” Ben, better known as “Krissy,” has always believed that all women are naturally beautiful. Just as she knew that some people were blessed with the gift of enhancing that beauty, and she happened to be one of them. From a very young age, she discovered her talent for making women feel and look more beautiful, almost like a doll (in the words of her longtime clients).
It was the lack of viable opportunities for women of color in her home state of Flint, Mich., that drove her to become the change she wanted to see in her community. Ben committed herself to developing and pursuing her true passion for beautiful hair.
She began creating her own styles and techniques to help each client embrace their unique and natural beauty while promoting healthy and natural hair growth.
Ben specializes in developing healthier hair, but she is known for her celebrity style wigs. Her readymade wigs started a buzz after they were featured on WLOX as a breast cancer giveaway.
Her glam-overs are a full package deal that includes a wig install a glamorous make-up application to complete the look.
GCW: How did you get started?
KB: I studied here on the Coast at Chris’ Beauty College and started my career as a stylist at JC Penney salon.
GCW: What motivates you?
KB: Most of my motivation comes from my family. I’m so grateful to have that extra push from them as well as their support. I can’t forget my awesome dolls; they help keep me on my toes with the lasted trends.
GCW: What do you specialize in?
KB: I specialize in giving women their confidence back when it comes to their hair. Whether it’s healthy hair, natural hair, or a protective style I offer it, but I am known for weaves and wigs.
GCW: What are your top beauty favorites?
KB: I would have to say my top three beauty favorites are:
- Heat protection spray: It’s a must-have. I used it on each and every one of my clients.
- Strip lashes: Nothing complements a full face like a good pair of lashes. The natural wispies are my go-to lashes.
- Last but not least, my curling wand; from big waves to tight curls, I absolutely love wands curls and the overall look.
GCW: What are some hair trends for 2018?
KB: I will be doing more wigs in all different styles. From the short Toni Braxton cuts to the long locks like Beyoncé. I plan on doing it all with no limits.
Tip: ALWAYS BE GENTLE
No matter how you choose to style your virgin hair extensions, I suggest that you care for it like your very own. Avoid damaging hair with excessive tugging, pulling, and twisting while combing and styling hair. I recommend using a paddle brush, wide-tooth comb or just your fingers to separate hair strands on a daily basis. Starting from the ends of the hair, simply slide fingers or comb down and through the hair gently until you reach the top.
