Now that we’re in spring, I figured this would be a good time to incorporate more screen-free activities into my family’s schedule. I admittedly find myself using the TV or the iPad to keep my toddler entertained while I prepare dinner or get us ready for the day ahead. One of my main goals for the year is to limit our screen time and spend more time doing activities together.
Here are some simple, easy ideas for having fun with your kiddos — no screen necessary:
COLORING
Growing up one of my favorite things to do was color with coloring books. I even enjoy the adult versions now. This is a great activity to do with your little ones. It encourages their creativity and can be a wonderful stress reliever. Your local dollar store is a great place to find coloring books at low prices.
SIDEWALK CHALK
As the weather warms up, you may be in search of some outdoor fun. Sidewalk chalk is fun for all ages and gets everyone outside. It also encourages the kids to use their imaginations. The best part is that cleanup is super easy, as the chalk just washes away with a little water.
GO FOR A WALK
Taking a stroll around the neighborhood is a good way to get out and enjoy some fresh air. It’s good exercise for you and can be a fun game for the kids. Try an “I spy” game as you walk; it’s fun, and they will really get into the challenge of finding things as you go.
READ
Reading can be a great, relaxing way to wind down for the evening. It also encourages conversation. My son loves to tell me what’s going on in the pictures as we read. Bonus: It doesn’t need to cost anything; a trip to the local library to pick out new books is always a fun outing.
COOK TOGETHER
Try letting your little ones help with dinner or even a yummy dessert. The look of amazement on their faces is priceless. Also, the more you let them help, the more they will want to help instead of being glued to the TV.
