Moms, raise your hand if the words “spring break” fill you with dread. Sure, you love spending extra time with the kiddos, but keeping them entertained for days at a time can be stressful. And then when it’s over, cue the guilt that you didn’t spend enough time and/or money to make it as fun as it could be.
Rest assured you can make precious family memories without the pressure or the hefty price tag. You don’t even need to venture beyond South Mississippi because fortunately for us, the Coast is filled with budget-friendly adventures that will delight your little ones (and you’ll have a great time, too!). From outdoor exploration to creative activities to educational opportunities, there’s plenty to do in your own backyard. Here are some ideas:
1. HIT THE BEACH
This one sounds obvious, but how many of us actually take full advantage of our 62 miles of scenic coastline? It wouldn’t be spring break without a little sand between our toes, so pack a beach bag, some snacks and make a day of it. The kids can build sandcastles, search for seashells and splash in the waves while you get a tan on shore. Want some extra fun? Gulfport’s Jones Park and Biloxi Beach near the lighthouse both have nearby playgrounds.
2. EXPLORE NATURE
The Gulf Coast is home to some beautiful walking trails where kids can spot wildlife and learn about nature. The Pascagoula River Audubon Center ($5 for adults, $3 for children) offers an interactive nature experience with boardwalks, kayaking and even a butterfly garden. The Crosby Arboretum in Picayune is another hidden gem, with easy walking trails and educational exhibits that introduce kids to Mississippi’s diverse ecosystems.
3. LEARN AT LOCAL MUSEUMS
Many museums along the Coast offer free or low-cost admission, making them great for an educational yet entertaining outing. The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum in Biloxi shares the rich history of the Coast’s fishing industry, while the Infinity Science Center near Bay St. Louis has engaging space and science exhibits for curious young minds. Artistic kiddos can indulge their creativity at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs and the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, both of which offer free admission for young children.
4. VISIT THE LYNN MEADOWS DISCOVERY CENTER OR THE MARY C
For an affordable day of hands-on fun, the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Gulfport is a must-visit. With interactive exhibits, an outdoor play area, and even a treehouse village, it’s a dream for curious kids. Bonus: They offer “Free Friday Nights” once a month, where families can explore the museum at no cost.
The Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Arts Center, known affectionately to locals as The Mary C, is another surefire way to engage the kiddos. Offering a unique blend of arts, history and interactive experiences, the Mary C. has something to offer for all ages.
5. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LIBRARIES
From magical story times to fun, educational programs to interactive play areas, there’s lots of reasons why a trip to the local library should be on your spring break agenda. At a time when the Coast is inundated with crowds, libraries offer a peaceful retreat where you and the kids can read and relax. Spring break is a great time for kids to find a new favorite book or participate in reading challenges that many libraries offer.
6. CATCH A FREE EVENT OR FESTIVAL
Spring is festival season on the Coast, and many offer free admission! Kid-friendly activities and events like the Spring Arts Festival in Ocean Springs or the Celebrate the Gulf Marine Education Festival in Biloxi offer lots of entertainment without emptying your wallet.
7. TAKE A SCENIC DRIVE
If you’re looking for a relaxing yet adventurous day, take a scenic drive on Highway 90. Along the way, stop at scenic overlooks and sites of interest, browse shops and grab an affordable local treat.
Spring break doesn’t have to be expensive to be enjoyable. With so many free and affordable activities right here, the Coast is the perfect place to create family traditions without breaking the bank.
