We all know the ever-popular slogan, “Spring cleaning” but have you ever considered it for your makeup? I have put together a few suggestions for organization and sanitation.
HEALTHY & HYGIENIC
One word: Bacteria! It grows in your creams, liquids and within those little bristles on your brush. It can be the reason your skin keeps breaking out or that you have had a sty in your eye.
- Did you know that your makeup has an expiration date? On the back of the package, you will find a small symbol on the container, which has a number and an “M” beside it, representing the number of months your product will be good for use. Start being more aware of this and definitely toss your existing products if you know it is in fact overdue. For instance, your mascara will be good for three to six months, while your powders can last up to three years.
- If you’re using disposable sponges, be sure to toss these after each use, while beauty blenders need to be washed daily. Sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria.
- Deep clean your brushes at least once a month, but use a brush cleaner more often to keep the brushes sanitized and fresh. I love to use MAC Brush Cleaner ($15) for a quick clean. It breaks down the product while sanitizing and conditioning your brushes and it dries quickly. To deep clean, you can use Dawn dish soap and cold water. Be sure to lay your brushes flat while they dry and then buff them through a brush cleaner to ensure they are also getting sanitized.
ORGANIZE & DECLUTTER
The biggest way to stay sanitary and clean is to organize and keep everything in its place. You don’t want brushes lying on a bathroom counter or old expired makeup in a drawer mixed in with the new.
- Magnetic boards are a great way to clear up counter space. You can get a piece of metal and add a cute frame to it. Then hot glue small magnets to the back of your makeup, to attach them to the board.
- Create a cute brush holder out of a jar or canister. Add beads or marbles into the container, so the brushes will stand up straight.
- Acrylic organizers are gracing the shelves of many department stores and are fairly inexpensive. You can get some that sit on your vanity or others that are specific to organize your drawers.
WHAT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT
Skindinavia Setting Spray ($39)
This spray sets and holds your makeup for 16 hours and controls shine. After moisturizing, I like to spritz it on my face as a primer, before I apply my makeup. I then use it as a final product to set the look and ensure a stronger hold on the hot humid days!
