Spring cleaning with purpose

8 tips for clearing out clutter and refreshing your home

Spring is in the air, and with it comes the annual call to refresh, reset and reclaim our spaces. While traditional spring cleaning focuses on dusting baseboards and decluttering closets, this year, let’s take it a step further; let’s reimagine our homes in ways that not only clear the clutter but also elevate our daily lives.

Cleaning and organizing should feel like a transformation, not a chore. Try these strategies to help you create a home that feels lighter, brighter and more intentional.

1. THE ‘REVERSE DECLUTTER’ METHOD

Instead of asking what you should purge, try the opposite approach and ask, “What do I want to keep?” Empty a shelf, drawer or closet and only return the items that serve a purpose or bring you joy. This helps you see your space with fresh eyes and eliminates the stress of deciding what to discard.

2. DESIGN WITH DAILY ROUTINES IN MIND

Clutter builds up when our homes don’t match our lifestyles. Instead of organizing for aesthetics alone, design your space around how you actually live.

  • Do you always drop your keys and mail in the kitchen? Add a decorative bowl or hanging organizer in that spot instead of forcing yourself to walk to another room.
  • Are your skincare products scattered all over the bathroom? Create a designated “spa zone” with a stylish tray that keeps everything within reach.
  • Kids’ toys taking over the living room? Use chic woven baskets that blend with your décor and make cleanup effortless.

3. THE CLOSET CLEANSE THAT LASTS ALL YEAR

One of the most effective methods I’ve used personally is the hanger trick. At the start of the year, I hang all my clothing with the hangers facing backward. Each time I wear an item, I turn the hanger the correct way.

After a year, I haven’t worn any pieces that are still hanging backward, so I donate them to someone in need. This system is simple, stress-free and ensures I’m only keeping items I truly love and use.

4. SEASONAL SWAPS: THE ART OF ROTATING DECOR

One of the simplest ways to refresh your home without buying more is to rotate seasonal items. Pack away winter’s heavier textures and darker tones and bring out lighter fabrics, fresh flowers and nature-inspired accents. This keeps your space feeling new without adding clutter.

5. THE 10-MINUTE CLUTTER RESET

Instead of waiting for “deep cleaning” days, set a 10-minute timer each evening to reset your home. Focus on high-traffic areas like the kitchen counter, entryway and coffee table. You’ll be amazed at how this daily habit prevents “stuff” from building up.

6. REFRESH YOUR SENSES, NOT JUST YOUR SPACE

Spring cleaning isn’t just about what you see; it’s about what you experience.

  • Scent: Swap out heavy winter candles for fresh citrus, floral or herbal scents.
  • Sound: Create a home playlist with uplifting music that makes cleaning enjoyable.
  • Touch: Trade out heavy blankets for soft linen or cotton throws that feel airy and light.

7. ORGANIZE WITH A LUXE TOUCH

Organization doesn’t have to mean plastic bins and labels. Why not add some sophistication?

  • Store pantry staples in glass containers for a clean, polished look.
  • Use velvet-lined trays for jewelry, perfumes or office supplies.
  • Upgrade your closet with matching hangers and a stylish ottoman for seating and storage.

8. A SPRING RESET FOR YOUR MINDSET

Your home should reflect who you are now, not who you were five years ago. Take this season as an opportunity to release items that no longer align with your style, goals or lifestyle. Letting go of clutter — both physical and mental — creates space for new energy, opportunities and inspiration.

Spring is more than just a time to clean; it’s a chance to refresh, recharge and realign your home with your priorities. Here’s to a season of new beginnings and beautifully intentional spaces!
